As a reader, I want to be left to fill in a lot myself--not consciously--but on some level. Give me a nibble of detail and I'll understand, fill in the whole picture about the widow's grief. Show me her pale hands folding and unfolding her napkin or something and I'll happily fill in all the rest. Reading is an act of imagination. Village explainers go yell in the town square. I think one of the difficulties in abandoning over-narration to trust the reader is that not all readers are the same.
